Dragonfly Family Farm

We are a small family farm in Maine that specializes in Giant Plush Lops and other pet rabbits.

Rabbit of the Week

Alana is a gorgeous 11 pound Giant Plush Lop. She has had some beautiful babies, but does not want to be a mother anymore. She is looking for a great pet home to be spoiled in! She is only 1 and a half years old.

Our Other Breeds

Stocky and compact the Mini Lop was brought to the U.S. in the 1970s bearing the name Klein Widderand. After a slow start and a name change, the Mini Lop (presented by Herb Dyck), became an official ARBA breed in 1980. Easily recognized by the softball-sized head and engaging lopped ears, the Mini Lop only gains in popularity each year. – Maximum weight 6.5 lbs.

Believed to have been developed in the 19th century by crossing the English Lop with the Giant Pappillon, the ever popular French Lop made its appearance in the US in 1971. Though placid and relaxed in temperament, the French Lop is a massive, heavy boned rabbit with a strongly developed, wide and sturdy head. They are a beautiful and majestic breed, and make a stunning presence on the show table.– French Lops have no maximum weight.

With more ARBA Best in Show wins than any other breed, the New Zealand rabbit was a game changer for many breeders. Despite the name, the breed was originally developed in the United States and became recognized in 1916. New Zealands were prized for their quick growth rate and meat production, and while the Reds were initially more popular, the New Zealand White soon took over due to the easy of dyeing a white pelt for the fur market. – Maximum weight 12 lbs.

First shown publicly at the Paris International Rabbit Show in 1924, the Rex breed was recognized internationally as a breed to watch. Imported to the US in 1924 by John Fehr and Alfred Zimmerman. The popularity of the Rex is largely due to the mutation that produces a short, dense velvet-like quality to the fur. Today the Rex remains the number one breed used in fur production due to this unique coat quality. Today the “King of the Rabbits” can be shown in 16 color varieties that showcase that plush and unforgettable fur. – Maximum weight 10.5 lbs.

Giant Plush Lops

In 2017 we decided to take two of our favorite breeds- Rex and French Lops, and make a hybrid breed that would have the velvety soft, plush coat of a Rex with the big (10+ lbs), sturdy body and floppy ears of a French Lop. It has been a slow process because plush fur and lopped ears are two recessive traits that are hard to get into one rabbit! We also primarily focus on health and temperament in our lines, which has led to some very sweet, outgoing rabbits that demand all the attention!

Future Goals: We are continuing to work on type and adding more colors to our lines. Check out our Giant Plush Lops FaceBook Group for progress and updates.

Before You Adopt...

Housing

Extra Accessories

The biggest thing you will need for your pet rabbit is a safe place to live. There are a variety of options, including a regular rabbit cage, a diy C&C cage, an extra large dog crate, an x-pen, etc. A giant plush lop or other large rabbit needs at least 6 sq. feet of floor space. Smaller rabbits can do with less, but they all appreciate the most space they can get!

Chew Toys (Their teeth are always growing!)

Home-made toys (the sky is the limit!)

Wood Pellet (they make great litter and are easy to clean)

Food & Water

Your pet rabbit will need a high quality grain as their main diet. We use Blue Seal Show Hutch Deluxe, but there are other high quality 16-17% protein diets available. Your rabbit will also need unlimited fresh hay daily. You will need to supply clean water at all times in a water bottle or bowl. Your rabbit would also like some greens and fruits in small quantities. Healthy treats can also help with training and bonding.

Litter Box

Most rabbits are very easiliy litter box trained, which can allow you to give them more freedom.

How to Adopt From Us

We usually have rabbits available, email us to see if we have what you are looking for. We specialize in Giant Plush Lops, which we developed here on the farm, but we also have several other breeds including smaller plush lops, mini lops, French Lops, Rex, and New Zealands.

We also breed guinea pigs, pet mice, and African Pygmy mice.

We can arrange a time for you to meet our available babies, or we are happy to work with transports throughout the US. Our animals are not neutered, although we do generally sell under a pet contract. You will need to supply housing for them, although we are happy to recommend products we use here. All of our animals go home with a bag of transition feed so you can switch them over slowly to their new food.
